Samuel was born in St George, Bristol in 1882.  He was the 6th child of Stephen & Rachel Legg. In 1901 he was living with his parents and siblings at 3 Kennsington Road, Bristol; like his father he was working underground as a coal miner.  In  the later part of 1908 he married Elizabeth Jane Parker and by the time of the 1911 census the family were living at 15a Air Balloon Hill St. George Bristol, and had two young sons.

Samuel originally served in the Worcestershire Regiment and was later transferred to the 11th Battalion, The Bedfordshire Regiment which was a 'Territorial' Battalion raised in January 1917, providing home defence on the Suffolk coast until disbanded in 1919.

Samuel died on home service and is buried at Bristol (Greenbank) cemetery; Grave reference XX.696B.
