A display of paintings by Nicky Huxham

During the Benefice week of Prayer a selection of paintings by Cornish artist Nicky Huxham will be displayed in St. Aidan’s to assist us in our prayer. The following is how Nicky describes her use of painting in her prayer life.

A Painted Prayer Nicky Huxham

1 Thessalonians 5v 16 -18

Be Joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances.

Romans 8v 26 -27

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with Gods will.

I have never managed to 'pray continually'; my words run out very quickly but God can understand all languages, even languages that are not spoken. This is where my creative journey and my faith journey have become inseparable. My language is colour not words so I have begun to paint my prayers, I am perhaps groaning in colour and the Spirit of God will still know what I am trying to say.

My preferred medium has always been oil paint. I love how it can be rough and matt and flat or how it can be thinned down and used almost like water colours, or used in great thick layers and made silky smooth. Ilove that it takes days or even months to dry and how versatile it is when mixed with other things. I love to paint on paper lined board and play around with varnish and lots and lots of layers, built up over days and weeks. Much like how a prayer will be multi layered as it is repeated over time and added to every day.

I am currently studying at Newlyn School of art on the Defining Practice course.

St.Aidan’s will be open on Tuesday evening, 19th June,  6.30 ‘till 9 and Thursday morning 21st June, 9am ‘till noon.
