George was born in St George in 1896, his parents were Samuel & Isabella Heppenstall, his father was a schoolmaster from Hepworth Yorkshire.  A 14 year old schoolboy in 1911 he was living with his parents & siblings in The Avenue St. George Bristol.  

The 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment were in France during 1918. They were involved with the Battle of Lys (9-29 April) this period incorporates the German attack known as Operation Georgette and subsequent fighting in the valley of the River Lys and in the Flemish hills. 2nd Lt George Heppenstall was killed in action on 24th April 1914.

George was laid to rest in the London Cemetery and Extension, Longueval. Grave reference 3.K 13.
