Eric was born  in 1910 he was the 3rd child of Albert Calway & Florence Halway (nee Hodges) of 36 Clouds Hill Road St George Bristol. Early in 1939 Eric married Phyllis Topsy Hale, daughter Jasmine was born later in the year.

Eric’s Regiment were involved in the later stages of the defence of Belgium following the German invasion in May 1940, there were many casualties covering the withdrawal to Dunkirk, one was Private Eric Calway who died on 21st May 1940.

Eric is buried and remembered with honour in the Hollain Churchyard. Row B Grave 3.

The churchyard contains 41 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, seven of them unidentified.
