Bert was born in St George in 1886.  He was the 6th child of John & Emma Downing.  A 5 year old schoolboy in 1891 he was living with his family at 17 Salisbury Street St George his father from Lewes Sussex.   By the time of the 1911 census we find him living with two of his sisters at 16 Salisbury Street, St George, Bristol; the census records his occupation as an Accountant for an Auctioneer.

On 2nd March 1915 Bert signed on for the duration of the war at Shrewsbury, being an accountant he was to join the Army Pay Corps. His military character was recorded as very good. It however soon became apparent that the rigours of service life had reignited a prior illness. On 1st may 1916 Bertie was discharged as being “physically unfit for service” he was suffering from Tubercular Disease of the Lungs.

Bert died in Bristol on 9th July 1916. He is buried & Remembered with Honour at Bristol (Greenbank) Cemetery Grave ref  XX. 696A.
